mounting amps upside down

Post by Tim »

I know back in the 80's and 90's this was a trend (especially in overhead consoles), but was this not hard on the amp to do??

I saw this type of install in a lot of mags, but I have always thought it was incredibly hard on the amp to do it.

Is it hard on the amp or is it just a myth??

not really bad for the amp unless the ventilation sucks

The electronics themselves don't care what position they're in for the most part... I mean think about it, you've seen them flat, sideways, angled, so what would it hurt to be upside down, but as Bill said you have to be careful about ventilation since heat does rise so the amp in the headliner will get warmer so you just have to make sure it can breath... But that's pretty much the case where ever you put it.

Of all the installs I have seen in the roofs of cars, ventilation is more important than asthetics.

Be sure that you have them vented and fan-cooled ( not relying on the internal cooling fans of some amps )

The heat sink is the most important part of the amp...it is used to cool the amp. When they are placed up side down, then you have a cooling issue.

Both Michael and Bill are correct. Cooling is your biggest problem and solution to getting good performance from mounting them upside down

Like the others have said, it can be doing using care, but I wouldnt just slap them up there and call it good..

Just remember, heat rises....

Mounting it (the amp) in an enclosed area with push/pull fans would help the heat escape... :D

I'm sure the fella's here can help figure out a good fan(s) lay out!

I'm not considering doing it, I just read alot and I hear different opinions on this and I wanted to see what the consensus view here was.

I was just confused about it. Didn't really know who/what to believe.
