I'm sorry, i've been meaning to say Bi-wiring.

But i'm afraid i will lose certain control on my pioneer 880

and i want to bi-wire my 346's with it's stock crossover.

I just lost the owners manual which explained it, and i can't find it on the net.

No problem man.

Thanks Jeremy. MUCH more accurate than my explanation!

I think a better way to explain it would be your passive x-over splits the freqs, not the power. Both the mid and tweet have 125 watts going to them. Now if your x-over had 2 conections for mids, and one for tweeters, then the mids would see 1/2 of the 125 each (they are playing the same freqs) and the tweeter would see 125 (its playing diffrent freqs)

Now for biamping (with the factory x-over). Yes it can help a system, but it will not make it louder. It will let you fine tune your time delays, and give you a little more control over output (say your tweets are two loud and you need to tune them down more). The down side, you really need two matched amps, or a pretty big 4 chanel to do it right.

Active on the other hand, is a whole diffrent beast. It gives you the same control as biamping, and (depending on your processor) can have more control over your x-over points. The down side is all the extra stuff you need to do it, and the knowledge to properly tune everything. You really need to know the speakers your using, and what their limits are. Its really easy to set a tweeters x-over to low, or just get everything out of wack and kill your sound stage.

Ok for those that are confused as much as I am, I'll translate...

Your passive crossover splits up the total power you send to it between the drivers that are hooked up to it. So if you're not changing the total power, you're not sending anymore to either driver.
Besides, if you're looking to make your stuff louder, power is usually never the way to do it. Unless you're Bill Wolf. ;) On a front stage though, definitely not. More power can help in terms of distortion because you're overtaxing the power supply or other amp components at high levels from transients.

o, ok Thanks

i just figured since the mid was getting it's own power source that it would be louder

by solacedagony » Thu Jan 25, 2007 4:44 am

No, going active is just another method of crossing over your speakers. Just allows for more processing.

yes i meant active set. mid then tweet.

i was wondering if it gets louder when going active.

amp currently is PPI 1000.4

most likely by then xetec P4 evo

If your passive crossover supports bi-amping, then sure. You can even apply time alignment then. It's probably not worth doing unless you've got more power and/or the time alignment to throw at it, though.
I have an Orion 2500d and that's DEI. I'm happy with it, FWIW.
