I have owned this head unit, Pioneer DEH-P9600MP for over 1 month now and I find it great. The sound quality is very prominent. It's features are also intriguing. I have had no problem whatsoever.
The 9600 is very easy to install. Having only the few normal wires, I installed it in less than a half hour. At first, the EQ'ing seemed off a good bit. This is where the Auto-EQ comes in (doesn't only adjust the EQ, but it adjusts the timing from each individual speaker). It is used via an included wired microphone. It takes 6 minutes to complete and when it has finished, man, HUGE improvement over the flat settings. The only downfall to me was that it turned down my sub more than it should have (only in volume, not EQ'ing) which was easliy fixed. The display is harder to read up close, but does flow very smoothly. The motor in the faces move easily and smoothly.
With a computer, you can create your own background or movie for the head unit. When updating your head unit with what you've created, it takes a fairly long time (about 20 minutes to upload via cd) but does not replace all of the stock visuals, only a few. The display can be manipulated in a few ways that I find very personal.
The head unit plays WMA's and MP3's flawlessly. The song list isn't easy to circle through at the head unit itself though. The direct track function on the remote works great when finding one of those tracks in the 70's or 80's out of 140. The internal menu is fairly easy to navigate (once you know how to use it
).
My only real irritation with it is moving through the song list quickly and putting on the face plate. The face HAS to go on in one certain way otherwise you sit there trying to put it on for 5 minutes. It's not bad once you get the hang of it.
Overall I rate it great. It gives you lots of control and good features. I find it very worth the $400 I paid. It is $600 advertised in many places which seems a tad overpriced. I have installed and used many Pioneer head units. They all are good quality and sound great.
