Well Im just stumped by that eMachines rig.

I pulled the battery out overnight. I also cleaned off the old paste and applied some new stuff, albeit not the best stuff.

I monitored the Bios @ idle and the warmest the chip got was 114 F. It flucuated between 111 and 114.

I put the recovery discs back in (Symantec Ghost). Redid it, fine. Cool.

Froze up during the windows setup...

Im baffled.

One thing I did notice is if I didnt have the USB and onboard LAN shut off in bios it wouldnt do anything.

I guess its just gonna go back on CL.

lol :(

Then I would for sure go with the Kingston modules. Should be around $80 per module, which is crazy expensive, but if you want the best sh!t, it is never cheap.

HERE is a list of dealers. Usually the cheaper the price, the shadier the dealer, the more risk of DOA or poor CS.

I will only reply once to your double post :p

Kingston KHX9600D2/1G

It might be expensive, but it is about the only stuff out there that I can say 100% will work for sure.

What size modules are you looking for? 1GB or 2GB? Also that board requires 1.8v modules (or so I read online), which are rare in the overclocker memory world.

Another person on another board suggested pulling the battery on the bios. Ive done that as well.

Clearing the CMOS will not be a fix most likely, unless it had some overclocking setting that was set to have the FSB or multiplier overclocked. Possible, but not likely.

Also, I didn't mention it before because you probably would already know, but the CPU fan may not be spinning full speed at that age. They usually used cheapo sleeve bearing fans. Or it might have dust bunnies slowing it down. If the previous owner was a smoker (no offense smoker) then it is probably full of sh!t inside. Take it outside and blow it out. If you use an air compressor, make sure it has a moisture trap.

Also, eMachines are well known for terrible PSUs. The also use mATX PSUs instead of a full sized ATX / PS2 can.

If you need any replacement parts, let me know and I will help you source them on the cheap. ;)

It's usually easier to pull the battery. Both do the same thing.

Probably don't have to pull the battery, there should be a bios reset jumper...

Jon wrote:CPU is overheating. Take the heatsink off, clean off the old thermal paste and replace with some fresh paste. Should work better after that. The paste gets dried out over time. If that does not fix it, look for bulging or blown caps on the motherboard.

Ok I will do that.
