I just proofed the Magic Jack terms of service agreement and there were a couple of concerns:
1) magicJack may, in its sole discretion, modify or revise these Terms of Service and policies at any time, and you agree to be bound by those modifications or revisions. Unless explicitly stated someplace else, any new features that may augment or enhance the magicJack device and Software will also be subject to this Agreement.
2) magicJack reserves the right to modify or discontinue the magicJack device and Software, temporarily or permanently, with or without notice to you. We will not be liable to you or anyone else in the event that we exercise our right to modify or discontinue the magicJack device or Software
3)No Warranties
These are just a few of the biggest things I found along with that they also say that they may terminate or interrupt service whenever they like with no notification.

I got a buddy who is a techie, and he got one. He liked it at first, then something about it turned him off cause I dont think he uses it anymore.
It messed with his computer some way, like he couldn't download stuff while it was plugged in or something.

Well that sounds cool.

I know people who had Vonage and didnt like it.

I dont think the magic jack would work for someone in Germany...? Heck dunno.

But for us based calling it seems like a steal! $40 up front and Im going to save $400 a year...lol

I love my vonage. 24 bucks a month unlimited calls to anyone in the US and all my friends can call me all the way in germany for free.

You need high speed internet.

Ive heard of people trying Vonage and not liking it or the costs associated with it.

This was $40 for the unit and first year, $20 a year thereafter.

They got a 30 day free trial listed on their website until midnight tonight. If you keep it they charge you the $39.95 for the unit and $5.95 for shipping.

Also note if you have a laptop you can take this with you. Hotels, McDonalds wifi, etc, etc.
So you do have to have your computer running to get/make phone calls?

My aunt had vonage and HATED it, she had alot of problems with hers...
