It works best for getting a flat frequency response. It makes it easy to tune an EQ with it.

Also, for software, check out the Room EQ Wizard software. It's free and seems to work pretty well, although I haven't used it hardly at all. I think you have to register for an account over at AVSForum.com to download it though.

I'd take dbx's over Behringer's anything anyday, myself.

A lot of guys also use the Behringer ECM8000 omni mic.

I believe you can plug the output of a preamp right into your sound card without need for a mobile pre or anything. You'd have to modify the cable, however.
