I thinking about putting sub in a ported box - i listen to mostly rap & rock and i want to really feel those deep bass notes. Is it true that ported boxes are better for this type of music? Would this sub sound good in a ported enclosure? Any ideas on box/port size and firing direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hmm.
Sub seems better oriented to a sealed box (low Fs, not so low Qes/Qts).
Ported boxes or sealed boxes can be better, depending on your tastes and preferences. If you are looking to make the ground crack beneath the truck - then ported will be better. But sealed boxes have the edge on clarity, and could even have the edge on upper bass response (where impact is perceived), such as you find with most rock kickdrums.
For box firing - read this:

(to sum up - it's the relative location in your interior, not direction, that matters)
For box size and tuning, you are simply bound by Hoffman's Iron Law, which states that the following three items are mutually exclusive in any sub/enclosure combo -
you control which of them to trade off, to gain you in the other areas, through your box design:

1) small enclosure size (compact box)
2) low frequency extension (low bass)
3) high efficiency (loudness)
Want loudness without needing to buy a 500w amp? Build a bigger box.
Want it to fit in a small space? Build a tiny box, but be prepared to feed it tons of power to even get moderately loud.
Want it to play extremely low bass? Tune it low, or make the box build, and expect that it won't win any SPL contests.
You are in control.
