I got the 4.5" Excels on a deal from Madisound.
I've heard the older Lotus components and I'd put them at or above everything on the market that I've heard as far as overall performance. Including Focal Bes, Dynaudios, the newer Morel and DLS stuff, MB Quart, newer Boston Zs, amongst others. They mainly suffer in extreme top end (above 12khz or so they're laid back) and the midbass is a low Qts design, meaning a flatter frequency response in a car door down low rather than being punchy and pronounced like most people prefer. In other words, most people are going to think the midbass is weak.
I can't vouch for the newer Lotus components, but they seem to be an improvement on an already fantastic system. The midbass is redesigned with a higher Qts and higher Fs, given the excursion capabilities it should mean that midbass will be very powerful down to around 60hz, the tradeoff being that it will rolloff quickly below that. IMO that was a good decision given that midwoofers don't perform well below 60hz regardless. The tweeter is a bit larger with a similar Fs, which should give lower distortion. Supposedly the dome was designed for better off axis despite the larger diaphragm. We'll just have to see. I'm excited to hear the new ones, though, they improve on what very few flaws the original set had.
