I don't know about you guys...but I'm still waiting to see pics of the new car :)

chrysler's 318V8, 440V8, inline 4L 6 and slant 6 were all bulletproof engines, as well.

That aside, taking the time to do thinngs like regular oil changes, brake fluid changes, ATF fluid changes, filter changes on ATF and Oil, timing belt/chain changes, tires, brakes, line and hose inspections, injector cleanings, or carb rebuilds, and so forth will make most engines last forever.. unless you have something with built-in failure like the GM crossfire injection V8s and so forth where they were just designed to self destruct.

I got one more for your best american made engines. The 3.8ltr V6 - have seen one of mine come out of 5 ft. of water and start up and drove home (after everything was dryed out and that handy lil can of WD-40). But it's hard to argue with Toyota when I've seen some of the hell those can be put through. I am non bias though cause every manufacturer has their good ones and their junk.
P.S. Yes after I got it home I did change ALL of the fluids and triple checked ALL the wiring.

I absolutely agree GlassWolf. I could almost guaranty that only around 10-15% of people ever do all the recommended maintenance that is right in their owners manual. Some engines are just built better than others, preventative maintenance is huge. I have double, if not more, of the mileage as some of my friends and never have problems with my vehicles but I do spend plenty of money on my vehicles every year.

how well a car holds up has a lot to do with how well it's taken care of by the owners.

My family owns strictly Fords and my brother just finally had a problem with the idler control valve (or something like that) going. Other than that, we really haven't had any problems at all with them. My dad owns an 2004 F-250 SuperDuty, I own a 2003 Ranger std. cab, my brother owns a 2000 Escape, and my mom owns a 2006 Freestar.

I think the Focus had a 100,000 mile warranty on it for a while (2005 year). They're finally extending the warranties, though.

Add the inline sixes of the past to the best engines :) . I'd put an older cast iron straight six against ANYTHING Toyota and Honda have ever made.

William from NOLA wrote:Ford was terrible to my family too. Haven't owned one since the early 80's. We had a 1984 Dodge Ram 100 and that lasted 17 years without any real major problem (except the air conditioning went out somewhere in the 10th year). Actually, it still might be around, we sold it in 2000. We had a 1988 Plymouth Voyager, that thing was crappy, treated us bad (also got flooded back in 95). And in 95, the van I used to drive was bought, Nissan Quest. That was a peice of trash (Ford made all of it but the engine -yes they made the transmission and yes it went out... TWICE). Nothing but a money pit. Everything major pretty much went wrong with it, but at least the interior wasn't all that crappy.

Ford didn't make anything for that van. It was assembled in a Ford plant with Nissan parts. The whole van was based on the Maxima powertrain, transmission as well.

I won't dispute Toyota for their build quality, but my favorite piece of lemony poopie dust was my 1974 Porsche 914. Ran like hell when I first got it, then ran like a bat out of hell when we put in a 1980 911 motor. I loved that car, and now, just thinking about it, I might have to go and buy me another one. It was the car I loved to hate.
