Dell - make sure it's a Pentium M class. Much more powerful that P4 mobile. ~60-80GB hard drive and 1GB ram. WXGA graphics. Screen size is preferential. Should be all set!

I just checked their website. The new pentium dual-cores are the fastest things on the market now and available in laptops.

If you can't afford them, the pentium M is the only other choice, IMO.

As for watching tv thru your laptop (thinking of making this your entertainment center in the dorm ;-)),
you will need a laptop with an add-on tv-tuner card (pcmcia or otherwise). I know ATI makes em'....

Or get a nice supply of DVD's and use them with your DVD-ROM.

My brother owns a decent Dell laptop and hasn't had any problems as of yet with it. I build my own desktop PCs, haven't had a problem with those either :)

ok i just looked it up... Yes they are a subsidiary of Dell but they still keep the same hardware design and pricing that they want.. In no way do any dell parts go into the alienware product line... everything is still the same they are just under the parent company Dell

I LOVE my HP zt3000 laptop. Had it for two years now and it is still kick azz. I use it for alot of photoshopping, music editing, website creating, movie watching, and I do all of my reasearch work on it (requiring cad type programs ect.). It is quite thin and lightweight for its size.

This is what I got 2 years ago for $1800 (I know prices have come down a bit on them)

15.4" wide screen

1.33Ghz Pentium M centrino processor
512 Gb DDR SDRAM (one 512gig card with a second slot available for a second 512)
80Gig, 7200rpm hard drive

SD Card slot (which rules because my MP3 player and my camera use SD cards)

This thing rocks my socks off. It is my only computer, and I use it for everything. When I first got it, the battery would last up to 8 hours if I was just doing menial stuff or not actually running prrograms, but I would still get about 4 hours of DVD capability, or videogaming ,or photoshopping. I loved that (my battery is starting to need replacemeent now though).


Cant say enough good about it though.

Bill No flack here man! I hear ya on that... I will vouch for the Higher Line Dell's. I have never had to fix one ever! And i have been fixing laptops for about 3-4 years now and never has a High line Dell come across my desk... These are the ones you would probably want to stay away from:

Low line Dells, Some HP even there higher line isnt completely exempt (I tried to fix a girls laptop but the HD failed completely and had to be replaced and that was a 2,200 laptop. Never Buy Aver ever! Low line Toshiba's but not all of them (you could get lucky) E-Machine desktops suck so i would imagine that their laptops are worse... Compaq laptops are terrible they are the lower division of HP.

I reccomend... anyhting that Alienware makes with the exception of their lowest line laptop. High end HP's, Toshibas, Dells, IBM's, and i have never had to fix a Sony VIO line ever.


And i totally agree with Car gods about the Dual processsor

As far as TV or anything video goes, get one with a dual processor (they don't freeze up on you while multi-tasking i.e. watching tv and browsing the web at the same time). It will cost you a little more, but sure to last for years and they even put'em in HPs and Toshiba now.
