I'm pretty sure I've seen that one at CES actually..

yes.. they'll build it for whoever flashes capital...

That photo is pulled off an Asian supply site. I guess they build/sell this woofer to anyone with the money.

Would be interesting to see/have.

Hey guys, lemme shine a bit of light on this design...

It a rather basic dual coil / gap woofer....

instead of most drivers, which ultilize a motor topography which direct flux into the pole / topplate where a single coil is centered, this driver has a rather lossy flux field, which is directed into what could be considerd dual topplates.. in each, a coil is centered...

here's a pic I made up...

advantages to this design? none actually...

instead of having one well focused flux field... you're trying to make two, and there doesn't appear to be enough metal in that motor to do it sucessfully..

it is a quad terminal woofer, which will cause a higher mms over a single coil.. of course the former is going to be twice as long now too..

no gain in excursion, or efficiency.. although the dual altered spiders will control deflection some, if the former wasn't that long, it wouldn't be needed..
also worth noting that the flux losses from that style motor wouldn't be pretty at all..

these designs pop up at CES every year.... its basically a show off style woofer, that has no usuable advantage over a common single gap woofer.. The suppliers are simply looking to attract business by saying.. look at this..

I go up, push around on it... wave to the nice people behind the boothe, and walk on

Well thinking about it and looking at it a little better:

1) Its a dual or quad voice coil.
2) It is a dual spider sub
3) The one coil is just on the other side. Obviously wired out of phase compared to the one on top.

Benefits: Dual spiders will help it stay linear. Having the spiders spaced as is will increase the accuracy.

Drawbacks: The added length of the voice coil factors in to the overall cone assembly weight. Im fairly sure this weight is crucial to the operation of the sub.

wow never seen anything like that before... who makes it i wonder? and i wonder how they sound... hmmmmm

isobaric?

by djr_81 » Tue Jan 18, 2005 7:45 pm

maybe it's a self contained isobaric setup. Top sub wired normal, bottom wired out of phase. They'll push and pull in the same direction. That's all I could think of.

Found that when searching foreign suppliers. Quite odd I must admit. Second spider where its at and all....But the thing that gets me is there is another VC down there or something? Cause there is connections on the bottom aswell as the top....

Thoughts?
