Hmmm, both sound interesting. I have been looking at various eclipse units, and others.....too many choices...just give the choice of the blue pill or the red one.

Anyway. One thing I "don't like" is MP3 even at high bitrates. But, I "do" like having a ton of music on one disk, or built into the unit.

That said, I see some of the DVD players (dvd playback is of zero interest to me) can play a "recorded" DVD full of .wav files (such as what comes on the original cd). Makes for 5-8 albums on one DVD.

Same time though, I'm interested in some of the parametric EQ stuff in the eclipse line (or do you go with the external unit?). Just getting into those units really pushes up the price, and complicates the mechanicals (e.g. pullout screen; wonder how long those will really last). I am looking to put together a reasonable SQ system. (you guys have been great in the speaker forums)

Thoughts? (sorry to tag into this thread, but it seemed to be around some of the same ideas).

I'd try and find the 8454 but if the price is good I'd still get Eclipse, better EQ (10 band parametric EQ), 3way crossover(sorry no sub out though) and the 8V preouts I do like. Also its so simple on the eyes, nothing like the new ones which are ugly.

I ownded an 8445 and too had problems...

I love eclipse but the 8445 just seems REALLY buggy.

switched to the cd5000 and it is MUCH better. had it skip ONCE and that was a really scratched mp3 cd.

Among the problems I've had so far:

1. The tracks start skipping through all by themselves. This happens with cd's, mp3's, or even listening to radio. The HU just starts to skip forward.

2. The CD's dont eject properly. I hit cd eject, the unit opens, nothing comes out, and then it closes again. I have to hit cd eject, then hit open really quick and sometimes the cd will pop out.

4. Best part is, I had the unit repaired and sent back to me and it still did all that. And now, there is static coming from my speakers unless the HU is set on advanced mode.

5. Another gripe is the display. It's not bright enough even on full brightness. If its sunny out, forget about reading anything on the display.

All in all I was very dissapointed with this unit when compared to my 5445. Soundwise of course it's better, but ergonomics and design = subpar. :sad017:
