Why are we readily accepting that a 2v signal isn't as clean as 4v?
Can we define clean? Sorry to be so anal... but to a newb, concerned with SQ, the term 'clean' can be misunderstood.

Misunderstood??? Yup...

The only difference between 2v or 4v is in the signal strength... a HU with the capability of 4v outputs will drive an amplifier to full output with little adjustment on the amp gains... The term 'clean' could be misinterpreted to mean that the lower the voltage the higher the THD, or Noise Floor... not nessesarily the case at all...

A little experiment for the curious... play your fav music track & measure the AC voltage out of your RCA outputs @ normal listening levels... This will show you at peak times just how high your voltage to the amps gets.

:) sounds like a good ideal, lets submit our application.

Beauty, thanks for the feedbacks! Rep Ups to ridr, couldnt get u one Society... I have to spread more around before giving more or something. Got the Pioneer HU on my next to buy list now! Once I get that I should be good for awhile! Again, thanks for the speedy replies.

I'm sure it's inaudible, it just sends a better signal to the amp. Quote from Ryan;
4v is supposed to help lower induced noise from the RCA run.

Also it allows you to use less gain at any given volume to achieve X amount of spl. In this own right I would think it lowers THD as you dont need to use as much gain... It probably isnt a noticeable amount of THD anyhow

Well, i have 2V outs on my deck right now and it sounds fine. They just give a cleaner signal.

I know you have been looking at alpine, but the Pioneer Premier DEH-P670 has 4v outs as seen here: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fus ... ct_ID=2403

Its under 200 USD so it fits your budget.

oi. The cheapest Alpine Head Unit that gives 4V Preouts is CDA-9855. That's a 370$ Item. Pioneer Premier = DEH-P770MP at 230$. How bad does 2V fux up the sound? Cuz looks like 2Vs is all Im gonna be able to afford.

will a head unit really make that much of a diff
Yes it can, I would go with the 9845, the $200 dollar one, has 2 pre-outs, so you can control your subwoofer amp, and your coax's with a diff amp. If you do decide to power the type S's or any other speakers you might replace, that pre out will be nice since you will be able to control it straight from the HU.
