yooper has a point, which boils down to the old addage that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
Any failing in the layout of a system will result in a dominoe effect of failures. It's not really wise to ignore any aspect of designing a good audio system. It's a lot more complex to get a good system for either SQ or SPL than just slapping amps and speakers into a car and cranking the volume up.

I've seen people try to argue that the enclosure is 90% of a subwoofer setup, and the subs themselves are only 10% of the equation. I think it's more like 50/50, but in any event, it's all important to some extent... enclosure design, placement, cabin gain, driver efficiency and BL, applied power, etc.

I think what you really need to be paying attention to is which sub is in it's correct enclosure. If you put an 8" in the correct enclosure compared to a 12" in a completely wrong enclosure, you're more than likely going to be better off with the 8". Even a POS in the right box can sound ok. Put a $1k sub in a POS box with holes, wrong volume, etc. and it's probably going to sound like crap. Enclosure is the key. Then all that other stuff about Xmas will begin to play a part.

the larger diameter sub will have more cone surface area, and probably more Xmax, so it's going to move more air, but it'll probably require more power to keep good motor control.
Larger subs also tend to have a lower Fs, so you can tune a ported box lower and still have it hit hard. Once you get below the Fs of the driver with a tuned port, you basically lose any advantage to going ported because of the increased power required to achieve the same output level as you'd need to hit that output above the driver's Fs.

it kinda like if you had a fat chic and a skinny chic on the high dive..........whos gonna make the bigger splash?

Heck yes. 12>8....

More surface area (Sd) usually will yield more SPL
