Sorry, I thought you had said Dell, but that is not important. Even if you had a Dell, you could still use a Gateway CD.

I can send you a Windows XP Home SP3 OEM CD that will work with your code for sure. Just PM me your mailing address and I will send it to ASAP.

It's my twist. Your money is no good here.

I think it's an OEM since it came preinstalled on the gateway.
But the sticker on the bottom doesn't say retail or OEM anywhere so I'm unsure.

It just says
'Windows XP Home Edition'
Gateway.

Do you have the OEM version for a gateway? If you do, I'll pay you for the CD and the shipping.

Thanks!
Chris.

Can you use another CD to install with your code:

Yes, as long as it is the same version of Windows.

You can look on your sticker and it will say the version it is for. It will either be XP Home or Professional. Since it was a Dell sticker, it is also only for the OEM version of Windows.

If you are looking for a CD image or disc, as long as it is the same version as your code, it will work. Service pack versions are irrelevant. There are three major types of Windows XP:

1) Retail - boxed software sold at stores
2) OEM - included with a PC
3) VLK - aka Corporate versions that are sold to large corporations to simplify their licensing. They have one code for their entire network of PCs.

There are also NFR (Not For Resale), Academic (student), RC (Release Candidate), and some other variants. All have codes that will only work with the specific version they were intended to work with.

If you need a copy of a CD, let me know and I can burn a copy for you and mail it to you, free of charge. BTW, this is not illegal, unless I were to also share a product code (CD Key).

Or if it is like the Dell I had to fix a couple of weeks ago, the regular XP disk would not work, it had to be the Dell os install disk. Fought with that damn thing for 2 days.......called dell, they wanted to charge me $50 to answer my question. But conned the guy into telling me that I needed to use their disk because of the way they have their hardware set up.

if they give you any crap just tell them your hdd died and your reinstalling. They will either give you a new code or authorize the one you have.

cool beans.. HDD should be here in a couple days, so I'll give it a try!

On two computers now with XP Ive had the legit/legal code but no disk and Ive used a Home version. Always loaded up without issue and validates out just fine.

Note that some versions that WERE on machines have things added to them by the company (like HP, EMachines, etc). I havent had an issue yet :)

You won't be able to use any regular cd/dvd of XP with the code. There are a minimum of 6 different versions of the XP disk per service pack.

I hope you luck out with a version online. You could always just install it with your key and then try changing the code later. I tried that once and it didn't work for me, but you may have luck.

Yes,

Just make sure that if the laptop is licensed for only Home, to download and use the Home version. Etc, etc, etc

cool, I ordered a new drive. Hopefully it works, I like getting free stuff, that's easy to fix. :)
