Some ebay sellers claim to warranty their products, with some carrying their own warranty (some at additional cost) and you can NEVER trust an ebay seller that claims to be an "Authorized Dealer" since many of the manufacturers do Not authorize ANY auction sales and some even No internet sales at all. So a true authorized dealer wouldn't want to take the risk of loosing their availability of those products, because if they get found out selling on ebay they will be blackballed from those products.
Since we're on the subject, the other thing that really annoys me (as a dealer) is when people bring in a product they bought off ebay and say that they need it fixed, but it should still be under warranty because the ebay seller said it had a factory warranty. Naturally they get mad when I tell them it isn't and rather than being peeved at the seller, they get mad at me and the manufacturer.
I am sad to think whenever I hear about bad services from actual local shops as well since these are the companies that drive a lot of people to the internet to begin with. These shops should be more geared towards service than product and as I've found people in general will almost always pay more for a product if they get great service and then as a bonus the security of a warranty. I myself have a customer coming in form Youngstown Ohio next week (about an hour and a half away) for products and install, and I Know Tim has even made the drive to Terry's... Why do people make these trips? Answer: Personal Service!
I don't even stock products here since I have the ability to sell so many and this is why I have appointments set to make sure that I have what I need for the proper person, vehicle, and install.
I as well as Terry and other dealers on some of the boards try to cut members some good deals as best we can, but I do Not even try to compete with online auctions (I even have a disclaimer on the wall in the office and in one of the garage bays stating that I don't), but the thing many don't realize is that when they buy unwarranted items from ebay and like online places is that many of these are trans-shipped products and sold at next to nothing which makes the manufacturer loose money since it didn't come from them. In the end the auction seller makes a buck or 2 and is happy, but everyone else looses out (the manufacturer, their dealers, the economy, and in the end the consumer if they have problems with it).
Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against ebay itself as a whole and it is a great place to buy and sell used or unwanted goods... It's just a touchy subject for honest dealers that see it being abused.
End Rant... Sorry.
