one determining factor is which has a better damping factor at the given load. i know there has been some controversy over the years about how effictive a rating damping factor is but im kinda old school and i like it. for example jl's mono block amps put out the same power into 4,2, or 1.5 ohms but the damping factor decreases as the load drops.....

Considering both amps are Class-D, Sorry I forgot to tell ya.

Impossible to say w/o specifying the amps. A/B is generally less efficient than class D designs so would draw more current, but many people claim A/B sound better. Most monoblocks are class D anyways.

I really don't think there'd be much difference.

Yeah I know that some are designed to in 1 ohm but that's the point. WQe are going somewhere! I just have difficulty to explain a bit. How they run compared to other amps that are designed to run in 2 ohms? will they draw more power or will they make more distortion to the sub? (again, a 2+2 ohm for the 1 ohm amp and 4+4ohm for the 2 ohm amp)

by Fishy » Thu May 12, 2005 5:07 pm

I'd think it would depend entirely on the amp then. Some are designed to run at 2 ohms, others at 1. My Xtant 1001dx runs cool as a cucumber at 1 ohm.

Yeah well it's mostly in the Amplifier point of view. If running an ''able to run in 1 ohm'' amp like the hifonics bx605d compared to, for exemple, some good brand class D amp that pushes 600watts RMS in 2ohm. A 2+2 ohm for the hifonics or 4+4 ohm for the other amp.

I already heard from another forum that it will get hot faster but except that, is there another thing I am not aware of? Take for exemple a 2005 Alpine Type-R 12'.

I've seen a few dual 4 ohm subs that have significantly different TS parameters and slightly different enclosure recommendations than their dual 2 ohm counterparts so they may sound different in the same enclosure, but should be able to handle the same amount of power.

You won't notice a difference in SQ with a Class D amp, but with Class AB amps, a 4 ohm load generally will sound better then a 1 ohm load.

by audiobass10 » Thu May 12, 2005 3:43 pm

In term of SQ, you wouldn't really notice a difference at all. I believe this holds true for all amps. They don't produce better SQ IMO. There's no magic amp that's gunna give you sound quality. Build quality is a different thing though. Hifonics build quality may not be up to par with a "good" class D amp and this can cause reliability issues, depending on what brands you consider "good" that is.

There is no difference in buying a dual 2 ohm versus a dual 4 ohm voice coil config. The only difference is the final ohm load presented to the amp. Generally, yes running an amp at 1 ohm will make it run hotter, but just run a cooling fan.
