my two sis-in-laws have both been on the Govt ticket, as well as my wife.
I can tell you that for two out of these three women made something better of themselves by being on govt assistance.
My wife had a tough go of things when she lost her Govt contract job and couldn't make ends meet with the money she was getting in from a lower paying job to feed my son. (mind you, I was not married to her, and her son is not my biological son)
This was about 16 years ago...and without their help, she wouldn't have been able to bring my boy up as fabulously as she had at that time.
My sis-in-law Kat (wife's little sister, youngest of three) was on assisted living and had quite a nice little home, and she is an at home mom, while her husband is working for a pawnshop, and they have nice things, but the Pawnshop doesn't pay a whole lot. They needed govt assistance and the only children they have is one jointly between them, one her husband has from a previous marriage, and one that Kat has from a previous relationship.
All three are very well mannered and they are growing up doing the best that they can. When the baby gets old enough to go to daycare, then Kat will get a job and help support the family.
My wife's middle sister is divorced three years now, and for two of those years, she a) lost her home, b) lost her dignity, c) lost her self confidence, and d) gained government help. She is in school and doing well, but, she doesn't have any desire to get a job even if it were part time. She has issues with the kids child support, and to date, the kids don't have much to show of it.
On many times my wife and I would pay for clothing for the kids and help out with food. I once even gave her money, and found out later she gambled it away trying to hit that "big spin".
I have washed my hands of her, but I still love her and wish that she would get some gumption. It would be that she still needs to finish her schooling and if she gets out and gets a job with that...then I think that this "living on the govt cheese" is well worth it. Only time will tell.
