In states like Ohio it's more likely due to winter blends taking effect. Up north different companies are going to offer different boutique blends and such and it really hurts your gas mileage.

In states like Georgia it's a different story. We don't need those blends, gas down here is pretty consistent year-round. Even in winter it doesn't take forever for a car to warm up either, meaning the engine is that much quicker getting into closed loop operation and running an optimal A/F ratio.

I wonder if that has anything to do with ethanol as a fuel additive? I know that Ethanol burns faster and evaporates faster than octane

Actually I firmly believe that too... I know I've said this before, but on the GM 3.8ltrs I've found that if when I get over 100K miles if I switch from regular to plus grade that I get about 4-7 mpg better.

sunoco gas gets me about 1.5-2mpg better gas mileage than any other brand.

Well I guess my reasoning for buying Sunoco gas only is half silly and half fair... the silly part is that I grew up around and going to the 1/4 mile race tracks (including running my own cars) and what gas has always been there? You guessed it, Sunoco regular and race fuels.
The other half is that we have a Sunoco refinery right here in Northwest Ohio and I believe I am supporting a local and American company.

theyre all basically the same company the all use the same pipeline and same facilities. the only way we you can tell workers apart is by the stickers on our hard hats

there is no way they can prove that... because if a company like BP falls into a shortage of fuel whats to stop them from purchasing it off of companies like Exxon who have some to sell... Trust me ... it happens.
