personally, i would just put them in the factory spot.
its simple, and you dont have to worry about cutting factory pieces or air bags. with the side curtains, i would even attempt to put them in the a-pillar. air bags are not something to mess around with.

Looks like you got a plan. Try turning the system on while holding the tweet. Point it different ways in different places and get an idea of how the sound is going to change depending on its environment and how little of an aiming or placement change can make quite a difference in FR.

Check out pics of my install so far here: http://s272.photobucket.com/albums/jj180/falkenbd/

You can see where I mounted the tweeters to try it out - I plan on trying several locations before mounting permanently.

Point the tweeter directly at your head. That's on-axis.

Now slowly start turning it away from you. You're going more and more off-axis. Off-axis is measured by degrees off-axis from you. So if you move it so it's pointing directly right from you, that's 90 degrees off-axis.

Bingo. I'm getting diffusion, losing top end on my mid and I can't get my tweet on axis enough so I'm losing top end there too. It's messing up the presence of vocals and instruments, not to mention imaging.

The side curtain air bags are not in the pillars, just the charge for them, and its encased in a metal housing.

It looks like a C02 cartridge.

The rest of the area under the trim should be open.

I would say angle the mids in the door, (under the panel) but your going to run into the same problem I did. Your limited on how much swing you can get out of the mid. So you can't bring the driver side on axis enough to get the outer images of the sound stage to space properly.

THe A pillars have a side curtain airbag in them. I think this might effect a more permanent install. This is the reason I was going to go for the small part of the door that sticks next to the A pillar - I could eventually flush mount them.

I'll try both places and drive around with them that way for a few weeks, and see how it sounds.

Any other opinions about the 6.5" mids?

try a-pillars first off with the double-sided tape. put them at a level just above that hump on the dash, aiming them straight at each other and away from the windshield just a bit. Betcha it will sound pretty darn good.

I would be mounting a new speaker grill over it. The new grill would be more open than the original. Don't you think the factory grill would destroy sound quality?
